We are coming from Portland Oregon driving to Sonora California. What is the best route to take for sight seeing
and to check out some cool places along the way. We do not want to go the coast route, been there done that.

If you are not in any particular hurry, there is plenty to do and see between the two. Get off of I-5 at Roseburg and head east on Hwy 138. That will take you to Crater Lake, which has some great hiking and beautiful scenery.

Head out of the park on HWY 62 toward Klamath Falls. There is great boating on Wocus Lake, or keep heading south on Hwy 39 and go to Lava Beds National Monument, a rare treat that very very few people know about. It truly feels like an alien landscape when you’re there.

Heading back toward I-5, there is incredible mountain biking in and around Redding and Mt. Shasta. If, however, you’d like to stay off of I-5, there is always Tahoe. If you’ve never been there, go. Again, great mountain biking, good hiking trails. Just beware that depending on the time of year, it can get very crowded.
